Some Advice For Your Flight
- Arrive at your departure airport at the recommended time for check-in. For some international departures you may need to arrive two to three hours before your flight departs. Check what is stated on your ticket or the airlines website.
- Allow enough time between transfers, and for check-in delays.
- Read the airline's rules on what you must not take onboard with you in your hand luggage. And see whether those items can be checked in with your hold luggage instead.
- Don't let anyone else pack your bags for you. If they do you risk having your luggage searched by airport security.
- Try and make sure your checked luggage is easily recongnisable so you can find it quickly on the luggage carousel and it's a good idea toadd a label to your luggage with your name and address.
- Travel Insurance, check that your policy will cover you for where you are going.
- Check with the embassy of the country you are visting to find out what their visa requirements (if any) are.
Types of Seats By Flight Class
Generally, there are four categories of seats available on most flights, however some airlines offer variations on these general categories.
Here is a summary of the seating classes available.
- Economy - This is the cheapest and most popular option, if your
budget conscious then this is the best one for you. The downside is that normally
you will only have minimal leg room, a smaller baggage allowance and probably be
the last to board. If you fly on a scheduled flight these will probably be the only
restrictions and you may still receive the same in flight entertainment and meals.
Most budget airlines and chartered flights only have reduced economy seats (without
in meals, etc.).
- Premium Economy - This is a step up from Economy, and normally
offers an extra few inches of leg room, seats which recline further. And may offer
other extra's such as in seat-laptop power or your own video screen.
- Business - This generally includes additional airport side features
on top of what premium economy seat's offer. Such as access to the airline's lounge
and working facilities. There may also be additional leg room or features such as
flat-beds.
- First Class - This is the most luxurious flights class and the
most expensive, offering the best seats on the plane. And a more personal express
service from when you check in. It normally also includes extra benefits such as
fully reclining seats or flat-beds, more room, and more flexibility over meals.
You must check the termsof the airline's seating arrangments before you book, as
the services and extra's offered by each airline according to the class
vary greatly.
How to find the Cheapest Flight
- Be flexible over the times and dates you can fly at.
- If you are flying to a holiday destination in general avoid weekends, as these are
peak times (though it's worth checking that there aren't some underbooked charter
flights available).
- For destinations such as the U.S.A. where there is liable to be a lot of business
travellers you have more chance of finding a bargain at the weekend, when there
are fewer business travellers.
- Always search for economy seats, otherwise you will exclude many budget airlines
from your search.
- Try other airports nearby.
- Consider flying with different airlines and making a few extra changes, as you may
find a bargain this way as airlines sell off unused seats quite cheaply. So the
direct flight might be fully booked but two flights which meet halfway may not be.
Remember flexibility is the key when you are looking to save money on your flight.
